About the January Birthstone

Garnet is January’s modern and traditional birthstone. It is not a single mineral but a family — from dark-red almandine and rose-purple rhodolite to orangey-red spessartine and green tsavorite. Mohs hardness 6.5–7.5, and the great majority are natural and untreated, a rare “what you see is what you get”.

The Meaning of This Month

Garnet symbolises friendship, loyalty, trust and passion. Since antiquity it has been a traveller’s talisman — said to guard those far from home and bring them safely back, hence its name as a “stone of return”. To give it to someone born in January is to wish “may you be protected, and may the bond endure”.

History & Culture

The birthstone tradition traces to the twelve gems of the Breastplate of Aaron in the Book of Exodus, later matched to the twelve months and zodiac signs; in 1912 the American jewellers’ association set the modern list still used today. Garnet’s red was set in rings and talismans as far back as ancient Egypt and Rome — the Romans even carved it into signet seals; that red has crossed thousands of years.
